UCA launches a fortnight of
green events
This week, the University for the Creative Arts is launching a fortnight of Green Events across all its campuses, raising awareness of local community action groups, sharing sustainable ideas, and showcasing greener ways of living.
13 Mar 2023
Sustainable menu options – limiting food miles, using local produce and focused on waste reduction – are being introduced at our refectories, including banana skin and cauliflower curry, celeriac steaks grown in the chef’s garden, and a St Patrick’s day stew made up using leftovers.
As well as this, the BikeStart team will be at UCA Farnham offering free bike repair services and general maintenance.
A representative from Greenpeace will be touring all campuses to talk about the movement and its vision for a greener, healthier, and more peaceful planet. They will also speak about the climate crisis, living more sustainably, and how we all help to make a difference.
Other events include……
- A visit from Hive Helpers, a community company with a mission to inspire care for pollinators through beekeeping. They will chat about the importance of pollinators in today’s world and how volunteering in nature can benefit your mental and physical wellbeing.
- An opportunity to volunteer with Green Up Britain, a social enterprise taking immediate action to restore nature and mitigate climate change. They will chat about tree planting and up-and-coming projects in Farnham Park and have sustainable merchandise for sale.
- Meet the team from Farnham Community Farm, a local year-round vegetable growing project on 1.5 acres of land just outside the town, who will be talking about local produce.
UCA Canterbury is hosting an introduction to its wellbeing garden. The garden has wild plants, trees planted by students, and several bird boxes. Gateway Adviser Louise Lees leads the project and this Spring hopes to register the campus as hedgehog friendly, establish some flowering cherry or crab apple trees, and use the garden to enhance the wellbeing of the students.
She said: “Step into nature, breathe deeply and listen to the birdsong. Come along to the Wellbeing Garden and enjoy some time in quiet contemplation or volunteer and make the garden a paradise for us and for nature. Have fun with like-minded people and enjoy some gentle outdoor exercise gardening the space."
You can meet Louise at the Cedar Tree near the entrance to UCA Canterbury on March 20 at 12.30pm for tour and to find out what you can do for the garden and what the garden can do for you.
