In development since 2018, and launched this month, UCA’s new Professional Practice in Architecture (ARB/RIBA Part 3) Postgraduate Certificate puts forward a new model for architectural education. The new cohort began their studies last week using this innovative model which provides a carefully constructed alternative for those looking to complete the final stage of their architectural education. Many activities have moved online during the pandemic but the UCA Architecture School had already recognised that this mode of learning is beneficial for many reasons.
“We’re delighted to announced that the UCA Architecture School's innovative virtual Part III programme has been awarded the ARB prescription and its first cohort of students is starting this month,” said Sam McElhinney, programme director at UCA’s Architecture school. “Planning for this bespoke online course started two years ago, long before the Covid crisis unfolded. Our aim is to allow individuals to participate without geographic restrictions or the requirement to attend weekly evening lectures which the Part Three usually entails. This format is designed to allow candidates and practices to structure their engagement around a schedule that works for them. We will engage with, and guide, our students as individuals rather than as part of an en-masse audience to encourage an online learning community. We believe passionately that this more flexible and accessible path to final qualification is a positive step for the diversity of the architecture profession.”
This is an opportunity to create a new community, emphasises Suzanne Gaballa, senior lecturer in architecture and design, who is leading the course teaching for this postgraduate certificate. The format allows new connections to be made, in a sharing and supportive network focused on common interests and experiences. This 12-month course gives students the flexibility to manage their time appropriately around their professional practice commitments. Programmed lectures will be uploaded throughout the course, and will remain available so students can watch and re-watch at their own pace, while programmed online webinars/tutorials will happen periodically at pre-determined times to encourage discourse around taught topics and encourage an online community. The content of the course is based upon the professional competencies as laid out jointly by the ARB/RIBA.
