If you are coming to the UK or are currently in the UK on a Student visa, you may be able to bring dependants.

You may be allowed to bring dependants with you to the UK if:

  • You have either a Government scholarship or Government sponsorship to study a full-time course with a duration of 6 months or more.
  • You must be studying above degree level on a course with a duration of 9 months or more.
  • Due to changes to the Immigration rules, if the course start date is on or after 1st January 2024, your course must be a PhD or other doctoral qualification (RQF level 8), or a research-based higher degree (MPhil, or MRes).

A dependant partner or child is one of the following:

  • Your husband, wife or civil partner.
  • Your unmarried partner.
  • Your child, under 18 years old - including if they were born in the UK during your stay.

Your dependent child – You will also need to prove that your child is:

  • Not married or in a civil partnership, and;
  • They are living with you. If they are in full-time education - for example, at boarding school or university and living away from home they are  not required to meet the living with criteria.

You’ll need to provide evidence of your relationship with your dependants:

  • A marriage or civil partnership certificate for your partner.
  • A birth certificate for your child.

You’ll also need to provide 2 documents confirming the address  for the dependant applicant, as follows:

  • A bank statement.
  • Credit card bills.
  • Driving licence.
  • NHS registration document.
  • An official letter from their university or college.
