Hosted by the University for the Creative Arts (UCA), this one-day conference explores the role artistic practice plays in transforming individuals and societies in contexts of conflict.

A diverse programme of panel debates, in conversation sessions and opportunities for discussions and artistic discovery, the conference features an esteemed line-up of international experts, practitioners, and emerging researchers. This includes UCA’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Catherine Harper and UCA Professorial Fellow, Jonathan Harris.

Professor Paul Heritage, Queen Mary University of London

How do people transform their worlds through creativity and the arts? What difference can art make for those who live in situations of risk, violence, and crisis? Professor Heritage will explore a case study from Brazil.

Conflict Textiles: Threads, Connections, Presence… – Breege Doherty 

Breege Doherty, Conflict Textiles Assistant Curator will trace the journey of Conflict Textiles from Chilean arpilleras in the 1970s to the present physical collection and online transnational live archive focused on conflict and human rights abuses.

Alongside the conference, we're hosting an exhibition at UCA ​Canterbury and online. Responding to the theme of conflict, contributions come from a range of creative backgrounds, from fine art and sculpture to video.
