Stavros Kotsireas: Trojan Horse

Stavros Kotsireas’s exhibition, Silent Nature, redefines the traditional still life through his innovative concept of ‘Silent Life’. This approach preserves the initial composition of still life objects as an enduring source of inspiration, rather than a fleeting moment. Kotsireas’s work explores the transformation of these compositions into dynamic sources of creativity, bridging the gap between nature and artistic expression.

Stavros Kotsireas: Technology State of Mind

The exhibition features both the ‘Silent Life’ compositions and the resulting paintings. The paintings evolve from the original compositions, with Kotsireas using colour, form, and brushstrokes to create new narratives and emotional depth. By displaying both the source compositions and their painted interpretations, Kotsireas highlights the interconnected yet distinct nature of ‘Silent Life’ and its artistic offspring, inviting viewers to experience the dialogue between inspiration and creation.

Silent Nature offers a unique exploration of Kotsireas artistic evolution through three distinct parts:

  • Part One: This section presents landscape work, focusing on the perception of landscapes as notions rather than mere pictures, inviting viewers to engage with the essence of the scenes depicted.
  • Part Two: Featuring the latest series, Silent Life-Nature, this part juxtaposes 3D sources of inspiration with their corresponding 2D artworks. By displaying both forms together, Kotsireas allows viewers to experience the creative journey from the three-dimensional compositions to their painted interpretations, reflecting the artist's process often confined to the studio.
  • Part Three: A selection of bronze sculptures showcases the artist’s sculptural practice, adding a tactile dimension to the exhibition.

Artist Statement

“When I take an inanimate object out of the natural world and place it in a still life or ‘Silent Nature’ arrangement, I am purposefully isolating it, stripping it down to its basic material attributes: its form, colour, and mass. This enables me to explore the essence and mystery of the object. Giving expression to lifeless matter on canvas is for me a poetic act.”
