BA (Hons) Arts & Media is an inter-disciplinary multi-media course, and Intermedia is its keystone unit which runs during the students’ second year. The resulting exhibition presents installations utilising at least two of the disciplines taught in Arts & Media, which include filmmaking, photography, fine art constructions and environments. The unit encourages students to work in an interdisciplinary way, or at least to think beyond the boundaries of a single discipline work.
The key thematic concern of Intermedia is ‘identity’, which can be broadly applied and interpreted and here focuses on a series of human or environmental concerns. More specifically, the exhibition explores the politics of identity, female sexist archetypes, and social assumptions based on dress code and cultural references. Drawing on a wide range of visual material and iconography, this exhibition considers and challenges our notions of gender, desire and value in today’s consumer-led society.
