INTERACT presents a body of Contemporary jewellery showcasing 12 selected symbols known as Adinkra, which forms the primary design concept. Originating from the Asante people in West Africa, specifically Ghana, ADINKRA means “farewell” or “goodbye” in the Asante language; these symbols are a form of non-verbal language that employs visual metaphors to communicate and enhance understanding among the Asantes. The symbols are ideographic writings that induce meanings that preserve and present aspects of the Asante culture as a coded system. The language utilises stylised representations encompassing objects, plants, animals, natural forms, hairstyles, buildings, and more. The symbols convey specific messages, drawing inspiration from proverbs, maxims, historical events, human attitudes, animal behaviour, plant life, and the diverse forms of inanimate and artificial objects.

As tangible manifestations of cultural identity and expression, these symbols offer a unique medium for individuals to embrace, embody and showcase their cultural heritage through jewellery, fostering a sense of pride and connection to their roots. Therefore, the exhibition invites viewers to a world of Asante Contemporary jewellery. Here, the jewellery takes centre stage, beckoning viewers to journey through the visual language, symbols and meanings encapsulated in each piece. The display is a tangible representation of the research's focal point: unravelling the cognitive interaction between the maker and the viewer.

Viewers are encouraged to immerse themselves in the experience by spending time with the jewellery, actively engaging by observing the conceptual designs and letting the symbols and meanings unfold. By fostering this interactive approach, the exhibition aims to ignite a dialogue of interpretations of the symbols, prompting viewers to ponder the recognition, significance and relevance of each symbol within the jewellery pieces and cultivate connections with the exhibited works. This approach seamlessly mirrors the exhibition’s core research theme, making it an unmissable exploration of Asante Contemporary jewellery.
