Through his series, Permanent Damage, Negative, and The Equanimity of the Flag of China, Jimmy Lee delves into the minutiae of the cityscape, drawing out the subtle traces of a society fractured by loss, agony, and remorse.

era, as a chronicle of Hong Kong's post-unrest days, challenges the established perceptions of political violence.

Echoing the struggles of many corners of the globe against political hegemony, this research prompts a quiet vigilance towards the pervasive nature of cultural trauma. Moreover, it prods everyone to consider the far-reaching consequences of violence and its lasting imprint, positing the question, "Whither Goest Hongkongers?" amid such ubiquitous pain.

 

Artist Statement

Jimmy Lee 李展翹 (b.1993) is a documentary photographer and visual art practitioner with an MFA (dist.) and is currently undertaking his PhD. Lee's photographic practice delves into colonial history, collective memory, and trauma. His current doctoral research at the University for the Creative Arts, partnered with the University of Arts, London, focuses on the aftermath of political conflicts in Hong Kong, cultural feelings, representation of trauma, and photographic practice. Through his work, Lee seeks to push the boundaries of documentary photography and explore new possibilities for the medium. He is dedicated to producing work that reflects his interests on geo-political topic.
