HARVEST MOON is a project researching biomaterials, seasonality, agriculture and gathering. Led by UCA Professors of Architecture Charles Holland and Cat Rossi with Sussex-based design studio Local Works, the project consists of a table made from harvested materials and a programme exploring what we collect, gather and give thanks for today.

Working together, designers and landscape researchers Local Works Studio, architect Charles Holland and design historian Cat Rossi (both Professors of Architecture at UCA Canterbury) have realised a table using materials harvested from a forty-mile radius of Canterbury in Kent, UK. The table, called HARVEST MOON, explores the use of biomaterials along with rituals of harvesting and gathering. The research aims to contribute to developments in regenerative design, place-based innovation, and the renewal of the local, the seasonal and the communal in contemporary architecture and design.
 
The table is intended to be the centre of curated events called “Harvest Gatherings”: like raising a barn, the table is collectively assembled at each gathering, as part of a ceremony that explores what we gather, harvest and give thanks for today. During its stay at the James Hockey Gallery the table has been programmed to hold events organised by UCA staff and students to explore themes linking the project with their own research. We invite visitors to sit at the table, explore the research process, gather a selection of the prints, reflect on and record your own relationship to the themes and issues it raises, using the sheets provided.
 
The table is accompanied by a selection of research material, including samples of apple and chestnut, natural dye experiments, baling twine and pallet straps, cast chalk test cubes, and sketches and photographs.
