Lecturer in Textiles (Weave)
After graduating with a BA (Hons) 1st class Woven Textiles from the West Surrey College of Art and Design (now UCA) Sue Hartree established her own workshop where she specialised in producing fine hand woven pieces in natural fibres.
Bio
In conjunction with her own work Sue worked as a visiting lecturer at various institutions (including Loughborough University) and as a mentor for the Ann Sutton Foundation for newly established weavers visiting from abroad.
In 1996 Sue joined UCA as a key sessional lecturer in woven textiles, working across all three years on the BA (Hons) degree, delivering all aspects of the course. Since 2006 she has held the post of part-time lecturer in Woven Textiles at UCA, working principally with year one and year three students.
Research statement
Sue’s research is practice led. Her early theoretical interest in the nature of the colour white and issues of perception have informed her work from the outset. It focuses on developing an intimate understanding of natural materials and how they can be used in combination to produce pieces of semi-translucent cloth that explore various modes of perception through the use of natural whites.
Her practice is also underpinned by an ongoing investigation into the natural fibres and their transition from the raw state into yarn, through both hand and mill production.
