Simon has researched and taught magazine publishing, journalism and media business for more than a decade at UK universities. A course convenor of the BA/BSc Digital Media & Magazine Publishing and the BA/BSc Digital Marketing & Social Media at the Business School, he is also a PhD supervisor for the Research Team.
Bio
Lead editor of a new book about the dynamic magazine publishing industry, ‘Innovations in Magazine Publishing’ (published in 2021 by Routledge), Simon has lectured on and published research in the subjects of magazine publishing, journalism and media business in the higher education sector for the last decade.
Before becoming an academic, Simon was the managing editor of UK black music monthly Touch magazine (the magazine arm of Kiss FM), a special publishing projects editor for TimeOut and a music and lifestyle journalist for a number of magazines including Arena and i-D in London, el Pais newspaper in Madrid and The Fader in New York.
Simon holds a PhD from the University of Westminster in managing creativity in media. He has a first degree in Business Studies and a Master’s (with Distinction) in Higher and Professional Education from UCL. Simon a qualified member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing and contributes to the Creative Industries Management Research Hub (CIMRH) at UAL, an organisation he co-founded in 2014.
Research statement
I am interested in publishing studies, media management, media business, creativity theory and the economics of creativity. My new co-authored book on the magazine industry encompasses some of the interdisciplinarity of these research areas in the context of digital change, diversity drives and the economics of content marketing and social media.
