Katso Otukile

Katso completed her undergraduate studies at the University for the Creative Arts (UCA), earning a BA Hons degree in Silversmithing, Goldsmithing, and Jewellery. Following this, she expanded her academic journey, achieving an MA degree in Jewellery, Luxury Business, and Management. In 2019, Katso established SPARKOLE, a sustainable business dedicated to jewellery aftercare, and in 2020 joined UCA as a Lecturer in Business and Marketing.

Bio

As an international student turned educator, Katso’s experiences have significantly shaped her approach to teaching, fostering a student-centric environment by integrating her personal insights into the learning process. This has been instrumental in enhancing student engagement and understanding.

In 2020, Katso embarked on a new chapter at UCA. She is currently a Lecturer in Business and Marketing within the Fashion and Luxury cluster at the Business School for the Creative Industries. In this role, she Unit Leads on: undergraduate Fashion Contemporary Issues, Fashion Global Industry & Futures, and postgraduate Fashion Buying & Merchandising.

Katso is pursuing a Postgraduate Certificate in Creative Education and HEA Fellowship, due for completion in autumn 2024.

Katso’s research interests are centred around entrepreneurship and skills development, particularly within the jewellery and fashion business sectors. These interests are informed by her practical experience and a deep-seated belief in addressing real-world problems through creative education and innovation. Furthermore, her prior role as a UCA ICT Advisor has equipped her with a thorough understanding of the university's software and systems, allowing her to contribute effectively to reducing digital exclusion among students.

Looking ahead, Katso is eager to lead and participate in initiatives aimed at enhancing students’ digital competencies. Her goal is to foster a new generation of learners who are not only tech-savvy but also capable of adapting to changing environments, thinking critically, and solving complex problems. By doing so, she aims to ensure that aspiring fashion professionals are well-prepared to navigate the modern technological landscape and beyond.
