Professor Cindy Millman

Cindy is a Professor in Business Innovation. A senior academic with business management experience in higher education; An experienced researcher (working on several large projects funded by EU and UK funding bodies) in international entrepreneurship and creative innovation fields, with a specific focus on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), as well as a lens of entrepreneurship education and gender in general, and enterprise and entrepreneurship particularly in the creative industries.

Bio

Cindy joined Business School for the Creative Industries (BSCI), University for the Creative Arts (UCA) in January 2023. Cindy was previously Associate Director of Birmingham City Business School, Birmingham City University (BCU) where she had worked for 20 years. Cindy holds a PhD in international entrepreneurship and innovation; a master in MSc Management and Marketing (with Distinction) both awarded from BCU. Prior to her academic career, Cindy had worked in industry and commerce for over 10 years, in China, in the field of international business, as a merchandiser and a manager of a large state-owned corporation in the fashion industry. This international business experience has influenced her current research interests, and she has published over 25 refereed research papers in various international journals, as well as numerous conference contributions and book chapters.

Cindy is a senior academic with business management experience in higher education (HE); An experienced lecturer with both academic and practical international entrepreneurial business experience; An experienced researcher (have worked on several large projects funded by the EU and the UK funding bodies) in international entrepreneurship, creativity and innovation field, with a specific focus on SMEs and enterprise. Cindy contributed to 2008 RAE, 2014 and 2021 REF, both in research outputs and impact case studies.

Cindy provides leadership for: students' educational, teaching and learning experience; academic integrity of programmes, compliance with the University quality framework and other accreditation bodies; and monitoring and evaluation of programme and performance in line with Office for Students (OfS) metrics and thresholds. She led and supported the University’s preparation for external reviews and inspections, such as those by the QAA, Ofsted, NMC, HCPC and/or other Professional and Statutory Regulatory Bodies (PSRBs).

Cindy is experienced in leading academic staff in her previous roles as Associate Director for Business School, and Deputy Head of Department (Strategy, Management and Marketing), one of two academic departments in the Business School. She held strategic and operational responsibility for managing and delivering a complex academic portfolio, ranging from Foundation, UG, PGT, PGR (including DBA), Apprenticeship and Executive Corporate Education courses with more than 4500 students. Cindy develops, validates and oversees transnational educational courses (TNEs) delivered through partnerships in countries, such as Sri Lanka, Maylasia and Singapore. She is experienced in managing and leading staff, e.g. recruitment, career development, implementing transparent workloads' allocations supported by appraisal and staff development systems. She conducts individual performance reviews to ensure key strategic KPIs are delivered, and staff were supported in achieving their goals.

Cindy is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (HEA) and a Certified Management and Business Educator (CMBE), experienced in leading reviews and developing strategies to enhance academic portfolio, for home/EU and TNEs/international markets. These were awarded in recognition of teaching practice and the role in advancing the quality of business and management education in HE.

Research statement

To date, Cindy has published over 30 refereed articles in international journals, 50 conference papers, a number of book chapters; delivered other outputs such as research reports and working series papers. Cindy's research interests are within the broad spectrum of business enterprise, involved knowledge transfer, and has a great level of interest in prompting creative education, innovation and enterprise. Cindy is a visiting professor in China and has an extensive track record of research, PhD supervisions, and has worked within Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) nationally and internationally and industry in promoting entrepreneurial education. Her research is centred around the following themes:

  • International entrepreneurship with emphasis on social capital, marketing and strategy
  • Innovation with emphasis on research and development (R&D), process, innovation strategy, network, channels and management
  • Entrepreneurship education with emphasis on internet entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial intentions by doing country comparative studies

Research supervision

Cindy is interested in supervising PhD students in different areas of international business, strategy, management, culture, entrepreneurship and innovation.
